The Crucible

The Crucible began as a fort and several smaller settlements. As the settlements grew, they eventually joined together into one large city. The original settlements were Fort Grujillo in the west, Holton (Hole Town) to the south and Port Real. Fort Grujillo was the first fort established on the mainland. As the military pushed east and drove out the orc and hobgoblin hordes, Fort Grujillo was absorbed into the growing city. Holton started as a town around some ruins where many adventurers made their names. Even after however many years it has been, archaeologists are still uncovering new layers and passages in the deep, ripe for exploration. Port Real was the first mainland port and is now known as the city’s South Port ward.

Twelve Wards

  1. Old Fort (A)
    1. Origin: Original site of Fort Grujillo
    2. Class: Military / Lower-to-Middle
    3. Description: Still the home of military facilities. Many soldiers live there. Many weapons and armor shops, exploration supply stores and the like. Little in the way of magic, alchemy and the like. Lots of taverns, brothels, gambling halls, etc.
  2. Holton (B)
    1. Origin: Started as a small town based at the site of The Delve.
    2. Class: Mixed / Lowest-to-Middle
    3. Description: This area still draws would-be adventurers and archaeologists and all the industries that serve them. The Delve itself is surrounded by shops, taverns, hotels, gambling houses and brothels. Past those areas are residential areas.
  3. Smoke Town (G)
    1. Origin: Grew up around the original refineries and factories
    2. Class: Lowest-to-Lower Middle
    3. Description: This ward is heavily industrial. Refineries that extract useful elements from mined stone, alchemical production facilities, large scale smithees, tanneries and other production-oriented businesses dominate. Warehouses abound. Housing is generally tenements/apartment buildings that house the poor/working class that man these facilities. The air is rank, the streets dirty. There are few beggars but plenty of thugs. Opium dens, brothels, gambling houses and taverns are the most common non-industrial businesses.
  4. South Port (H)
    1. Origin: Originally the small settlement of Port Real, this area was the original port for the mainland.
    2. Class: Low/Working
    3. Description: With the establishment of North Port, a lot of the wealthier merchants took their business to the north side of the city. Still, South Port does a bustling business. The area is rough and street crime is high, but access to the open sea keeps a lot of business in the area. Plus, smugglers, pirates and all sorts of seafaring ne’er do wells make their business deals in the dark corners of the ward.
  5. Waterton ©,Cobblers Hill (D), River Bottom (E)
    1. Origin: As people flooded to the mainland to explore ruins, establish mining colonies or plantations, and otherwise find their fortunes, they began to overflow the borders of the initial small settlements like Holton and Port Real.
    2. Class: Mixed, low to middle, some few upper
    3. Description: These wards are melting pots of culture from the various islands. They are also home to any of the “savages” (goblins, half-orcs cast out from orc tribes, etc.) who come to the city to make their way. These wards have neighborhoods that are predominantly of one race or culture, but they sit right alongside each other in relative harmony. (Think Little Italy being around the corner from China Town, etc.) Between areas D and E is the coliseum, where all manner of sporting events, often violent, keep people entertained.
  6. Low Town (F)
    1. Origin: The most destitute need somewhere to live, right?
    2. Class: Lowest
    3. Description: Crime-ridden, filthy streets. Fire-trap tenements. This place just sucks, but you can get any kind of illicit goods here, all the way to human trafficking, drugs, cursed items… the works. The alignment of this ward is decidedly evil, but enough powerful people see the use in having an area like this in their city that it doesn’t get purged.
  7. Hill Bottom (J)
    1. Origin: ?
    2. Class: Middle
    3. Description: Hill Bottom is a middle class area of mixed use. Shops of varying quality line the streets, entertainers roam the squares and markets, taverns bustle with good natured fun in the evenings. Mercenary companies like the Margin Walkers keep their headquarters in this ward. The streets are generally safe though crime does happen from time to time.
  8. Oberlynn Hill (K)
    1. Origin: ?
    2. Class: Upper-middle to Upper
    3. Description: This is the wealthiest ward in the city. Powerful merchants, guild leaders, minor royalty from the islands, movers and shakers of all stripes… they all live here. The streets are wide and clean. Houses are large with manicured lawns and sculpted landscaping. Private guards stand watch at the gates to many estates. The highest quality goods and services can be had here, but it comes with a price.
  9. North Port (L)
    1. Origin: ?
    2. Class: Mixed, lower to upper
    3. Description: The port area on the north side of the river is a mixed bag. The docks are as seedy a place as any waterfront, but beyond the warehouses are two important districts where the major guilds and religions have their respective headquarters.
  10. Center City (I) and 2
    1. Origin: Sprang up as the center of government when the various settlers agreed to incorporate the city
    2. Class: Government / Middle to High
    3. Description: Center City takes up two islands in the middle of the river. All of the major government buildings (halls of justice, capitol building, etc.) are found here, along with the embassies from the various island nations. Clean, orderly, well manicured. High end restaurants, art dealers, fine clothing stores and the like are the main commerce. Everything the government officials need to not have to leave the island is present. The highest tiers live on the island, while their underlings generally live in the higher class neighborhoods north of the river. The south island of Center City houses the great bazaar, a huge outdoor market where high quality goods from all the islands can be found and the only place where all the classes truly mix. It’s the true heart of the city.
